Expressions of Faith
The Expressions section examines the ways in which nonprofits and foundations convey their faith inspiration to those who are unaffiliated with the organization. Nonprofits' and foundations’ websites are often the first points of contact made with potential volunteers, partners, or otherwise interested parties. Because of this, the digital self-expression of these groups provides a basis on which to evaluate credibility and give the viewer an idea of the group’s purpose and values. This first point of contact can play a large role in eventual decisions to fund or work with a group based on the ways that they present themselves to the outside world.
We have distilled the levels of faith expression into six categories in order to make broad, elastic, conclusions and to compare across categories. The groupings can be thought of as a stepwise continuum, with each identification exhibiting one degree of faith expression greater than the previous step. The categories, in order of increasing degree of faith expression, are: No Indication, Symbols, Icons, Words, Statements, and Scripture. Below you will find details of each category as well as corresponding case studies.
